The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of online social networks on national identity. The research method is survey and the statistical population consisted of citizens over 15 years of Tabriz. The sampling method is multi-stage cluster sampling and research tool is researcher made questionnaire. The findings showed that the duration of membership has a negative effect on national identity and dimensions of awareness and commitment. Also, the effect of the amount of activity on the commitment and actual presence on the awareness is negative. But being active has a positive effect on the belonging and commitment of national identity. The impact of online social network on commitment is more than other dimensions. The results showed that mere presence in online social networks does not have a positive or negative effect on national identity, but the social and cultural context of users is effective in determining the type of impact of these networks and providing a comprehensive definition of national identity can strengthen identity.

As Mass Media is expanding nationally and internationally and affects the cultural foundations of the society, the common elements of the various cultures, through such contact and relation of the cultures, are mixing with each other. The important change about culture is the mutual understanding of the cultures, with no tendency to remove one. In this respect, the cultural democracy emphasizes on the principle that the dependency of an individual to a culture is one of the basic human needs and every individual, group, and community possesses the right to be appointed to (a) culture(s). This article, posing the question about the components of cultural democracy, identifies the mutual relationship between media and culture. Respecting others’ values and moving towards an international society with concord and harmony, depends on the removal of the restrictions of intercultural relations, not the removal of the cultures. Media is considered as on effective foundation in the culture of the societies and functions within cultures. The result of such relation and bond is the mutual connection between Media and culture. The revolution of information, and accordingly the (phenomenon of) globalization of Media make a turning point in developing political, economical and cultural cooperation between different societies.

Advertisement is one of the most important parts in any media around the world. Most of the ideas presented in peoples’ life are conveyed through advertisements. It plays a pivotal role in shaping the dominant discourse. To have an effective advertisement, producers search the ways to capture the audiences' attention. Therefore the beautification of products always is in the center of producers’ attention: they depict a utopian world through the advertisements. Thomas More who challenged the dominant discourse of his time in Utopia, introduces utopia as a place in which no misery, poverty and hate exist. In present time, advertisement tries to unite utopia and ideology. This paper will study the utopian world according to its primary definition and its changes during the time; the way that advertisement implicitly works through hegemony to implement ideology. Then, emphasizing on Iranian television advertisements in early 1390s (2010s), the research follows the issue up in an empirical and objective way. Our research takes advantage of interdisciplinary studies as an integral part of comparative literature. It also uses the new definition of text that includes any cultural product and blurs the boundary between low and high literature. Among the different scopes of advertisement, the focus of this study is on household appliances. The aim is to find the ideology behind this utopian representation and its affinities with the real life of the target audience.

The current paper tries to evaluate new media system and identify its functional roles in an ideal society. Considering radio stations, their effectiveness mostly rely on their interaction with the society and on marketing. Therefore, the researcher has tried to analyze the literature on media studies with a focus on radio to map its roles and analyze its functions in the following criteria: 1. Cultural Punctuation (the role of radio in cultural identification) 2. Social Computation (radio as an agent for public service efficacy) 3. Language Gardening (radio as a reference of language standardization) Promoting these three major roles will lead to the formation of a media culture, which by propagating will enhance the role of media in our lives. At macro level, the current study tries to trace how radio stations affect our social lives by introducing six major methods of effectiveness. At micro level, it is aimed at identifying operational goals by introducing 12 sub-roles for radio stations, which could be done by studying previous researches and carrying out field studies.

In the modern governance, to media, as a central point in the issues such as good governance, paramount importance is attached by experts of governmental management and media management. On the other hand, researchers in the fields of political sciences and international studies have pointed, while discussing issues such as diplomacy of media, propaganda, and soft war, to the role played by media in formation of the soft power of nations and schools. A study of the literature in this field, however, reveals absence of a comprehensive and operational explanation of the role played by media in intelligent management of domestic affairs of countries on the one hand and their international relations on the other. In the era of globalization and for a country like Iran, which has faced for long years soft and hard attacks made by domestic and foreign enemies, this is of much more importance. The present study begins with a systematic review of the literature in the field of media, culture, governance, and soft power. Then and after discussing requirements and functions of media in an atmosphere of soft war, results are presented in the form of an operational model for policy-making in the field of media. In conclusion, executive and applied findings and requirements have been summed up. In the era of globalization, to attain transcendence, it seems that media with morality-centered and national-based concerns should have four functions: attraction, repulsion, invasion, and policy in relation to domestic and international interests of those involved. As defined in the present article, the transcendent media are media which, relying on fundamental cultures and values of the society, accompany people and governance both in domestic affairs and foreign policy so that the country's affair may be managed and developed. Results of the present study may be employed, as a framework, for comprehensive studies and policy-makings in the field of soft defense, and, consequently, pave the way to establish and develop intelligent power of the intended culture or ideology.

This study is an ethnographic research in which we have collected data using deep interview on the Tehranian people’s perception of IRIB media justice preservation. The studied population consists of two social classes residing in Tehran, the rich and the poor. The rich or high-income group includes the family whose monthly income is more than ten million Tomans and the poor or low-income families include the people whose monthly income is less than seven hundred thousand Tomans. A targeted sampling was conducted among the two groups, finally 45 persons were interviewed; 20 persons from among the high-income class and 25 others from among the low-income class. The qualitative coding was applied to analyze the data gathered in the interviews. According to the represented concept of the media justice in this study, equal distribution of the opportunities and facilities for all people and all regions of the country- in a way that all parts of the country can be displayed harmoniously- has been emphasized, so that people stop feeling there is centralism in the country and do not think that the media is controlled by the ruling class who, without understanding the people’s problems and troubles, displays what it like and not what actually happens in the society

Mass Communication Media are information highways which roles in culture and identity have recently interested social science scholars. In this regard, different conceptual frameworks have been of offered. Snowball communication is an idea that emphasizes the formation of identities through Mass media. On the contrary, some scholars emphasize information analysis. Still others emphasize a more balanced approach and point out the contradictory and dual role of mass media in both forming and eroding national identity. The purpose of the present article is to explore the level and content of TV programs, satellite channels, and internet sites on national identity of the citizens and their variables. The population of the study was the residents of Kashan, a traditional city that has recently begun movement toward modernity. The study is a survey work in which data have been collected through questionnaires and interviews. A 10-item Likert- scale questionnaire provided data on the main variable. The cronbach’s alpha reliability was 0.84. Results indicated significant positive correlation between TV use and tendencies toward national identity (Tb= 0.252). However, the relationship was negative for the use of satellite channels and the internet (TC= -0.271 and -0.199). Chi-square analysis also confirmed the data. Regression analysis (β= 0.268 and -0.276) also reflects the positive effects of TV and the negative effects of Satellites on national identity.

The paper addresses the question as to the relationship between structural elements and user actions in the four networks. It proposes a model build on Thomas theory and on Lindlof and Taylor’s qualitative approach to communication in order to provide a better understanding into user actions in the virtual world. The paper also redefines notions of voluntary groups, circles and aggregates, and dyads. Results suggest that user self-representation is influenced by structural elements of the network, anonymity and norms of the virtual world.

The topic discussed in this research is the representation of Iranian society in facing modernity in Bitter Coffee TV series directed by Mehran Modiri. The question is whether the Iranian society is represented as an unreasonable phenomenon incompatible with modernity or not. To answer this question, the narrative analysis (Greimas actors’ analysis pattern) is used. Then, using the postcolonial studies, we criticized the representation of the traditional and modern characters; the barriers of developing modernity in Iran. After the Greimas pattern being adapted with four episodes of the TV series, the findings show that all of the traditional characters are represented as the other for “Mostasharolmolk” (the symbol of modernity). In other words, they are characterized using stereotypes such as stupid, lazy, profit-seeking, and illogical. On the other hand, the protagonist (the symbol of modernity) is represented as creative, active and logical. All over the series, Mostasharolmolk has an active role. Regarding this, we can conclude that the Iranian society and culture are represented as if they had no motivation to change and progress. Therefore, the Iranian society is lacks any abilities to change and any attempts to become modern. In the series narration, the main barriers of developing modernity include the structure of the educational system, the vertical structure of the power, Iranian despotism, the stupidity and laziness of the Iranians, which hold them back from achieving their goals. Based on the postcolonial criticism, we can claim that although the series is correctly showing the weaknesses of the Iranian society, the dominant narration of the series approximates the Orientalistic discourses which are criticized by the postcolonial studies.

The elaboration of culture industry by theodor W.Adorno and Max Horkheimer- co- authors of Dialektik der Aufklarung (Dixlectic of Enlightment)- is grounded on their account of how the identity – based instrumental reason of enlightenment (Aufklarung), thought intended to secure freedom from fear of mythical authorities, could turn into the political, social and cultural totalitarian domination, depriving humans of their individual freedom and creativity and reifying both society and individuals. As Adorno and Horkheimer put, the culture producing media, thanks to technical mass reproduction, in the late capitalism, functions as pre- determining schematism of the whole cultural products through standardizing all varieties and diversities in such a way that obedience can be confused with freedom. Thus, in the system of exchange value, culture industry makes any object into commodity, whether being economical or cultural. This paper is a version of how Adorno and Horkheimer justify this disastrous suppression which through atomizing process levels down all humans and their tastes and creativities. Meanwhile, the essay has a brief critical assessment of this so called doctrine.

SNSs have played an important role in the political, social, cultural and even economic events in recent years, so studying them and their effects is a necessary. Following such rationale, we assess the effects of these sites on ethnical identity. Reviewing exiting literature shows that ethnical identity includes 4 dimensions: ethnical identification, ethnical culture belonging, ethnical community commitment, and political dimension. Also we used a combination of purpose and snowball sampling methods to gather the research sample, and research is done using online questionnaire. Facebook was chosen as a research field due to its popularity. Results show that there is a relation between SNSs using and ethnical identity. Radio is used for educational purposes in many countries all over the world. However, its significance, for both formal and informal learning, has been overlooked in Iran, regarding the data driven from multiple researches on this subject. The current study is aimed at outlining the significance of starting an educational radio station in Iran, considering the social, cultural and economic settings of the country, and it tries to introduce patterns for educational programming. The underlying theoretical framework of this study is based on Lasswell & Lerner’s theories. The data will be driven from the semi-structured interviews with eight experts on the field. Upon data analysis, it will become apparent that an educational radio station is greatly needed in a country like Iran with a large number of rural societies, multiplicity of cultures, and problems like inaccessibility to educational services. Radio, as it is easily accessible for all, can be used as a teaching assistant tool for formal learning. Moreover, concerning informal learning, radio can have an effective role in increasing public knowledge, accelerating social development and generating educational justice.
